An update on COVID-19 (Coronavirus)


UPDATE 23 March 2020

As New Zealand has reached alert level 3, we will be closed until further notice from 3pm today. All future membership fees will cease automatically (members do not need to take action). We will continually update this page if and when we have further updates.

Please note that due to the heavy amount of enquiries, there may be a delay in response time, but someone will get back to you as soon as possible.

We strongly encourage the public to continue their fitness regime at home during this time as maintaining your health is key to fighting COVID-19 and we will be following up with tools and resources to help in that regard. CityFitness will continue to be here for your health and fitness needs and look forward to seeing you in the clubs when the time allows. Until then please stay safe and take care.




UPDATE 21 March 2020

Following the latest Gov’t regulations/updates, we are still operating as per our last update on 20 March. We are now working to prepare our clubs for closure if required.




UPDATE 20 March 2020

To comply with gov’t recommendations, we are now working to maintain social distancing as this is one of the best ways to help mitigate the spread of the coronavirus. While we’re asking all members to be responsible by doing their part, we are also putting the following efforts in place to ensure everyone’s safety:

Restricting access to members only.
Casual visits are restricted until further notice.

Limiting equipment availability.
Half of the machines on the cardio floor are unavailable until further notice.

Reducing the size of Group Fitness classes.
We are limiting class attendance in the main studios to 25 participants, in the yoga studio to 10 participants, and half the normal capacity in the HIIT & cycle studios. We will allow members to schedule classes through the CityFitness app to reserve spots and view class capacity to ensure we maintain the required class size.

Providing at home workouts, classes, and coaching.
We’re working to continue assisting members in their fitness program by providing at home streaming services and virtual coaching in the event that we have to close our clubs.

Limiting the club capacity.
We have not yet set a maximum capacity per club, but as things progress, this is something we may need to put in place.

We apologise for the inconvenience and appreciate everyone’s help in keeping New Zealand safe. Please be mindful that we together have to slow down in order to avoid a shut down.

If a member wishes to cancel or put their membership on hold, our standard terms still apply, however, we are allowing members to place their membership on a 4 week hold at no charge so they can reassess as things progress over the next few weeks.

For those who have returned from being overseas in the last 14 days, please stay home as requested and avoid coming into the gym.


We would like to update our members and the community on our efforts to prioritise the health and safety of those using our facilities Most importantly, we encourage everyone to continue with physical exercise as it is a key component in maintaining good health, strengthening immunity, and lowering stress - all which are vital at this moment.

With respect to the safety of exercising within our facilities, it is important to understand that COVID-19 is not spread through sweat, but through respiratory droplets. Therefore, the risk of spreading the virus in a gym or health club is no greater than any other social environment however we recognise that risks still exists and want to take every opportunity to reduce that for all staff, members and the community at large.

As most businesses, we are continually monitoring updates from the Ministry of Health along with international sources to respond accordingly. While our clubs nationwide already have a high standard of cleanliness, we are implementing the following to ensure the community is safe in our environment:

  • Using hospital-grade cleaning solutions to ensure our clubs are sanitised as thoroughly as possible
  • Increasing the number of cleaning hours across all clubs to increase the frequency of sanitisation
  • Adding additional cleaning stations for all clubs to ensure cleaning products are easily accessible from anywhere in the club
  • Increasing signage in all clubs to promote good hygiene

We are working to respond as necessary should the circumstances require an increased level of social distancing to mitigate the risk of further spread including:

  • Reduction of group fitness class size
  • Temporary closure of locations if required
  • Providing at home workouts and fitness coaching through the CityFitness app

As this situation develops, we will continually update this page with further initiatives. The health and safety of our members and staff are our first priority and we’re prepared to implement other actions if necessary.
